Nib
Type Face Design, Type Specimen.

Ireland is not a country commonly associated with graphic design and typography, but it does possess a very distinctive typographic form known as the ‘Irish Type’.
The subject of the 'Irish Type' and its association with Irish national identity provided the main inspiration behind my decision to undertake type design on my MA course. The combination of the subjects’ complex historical context, the unusual position of the Irish Type as a ‘National Type’ and the subsequent questions raised by its existence left me with a desire to articulate my own typographic response to the subject. The result of this process is Nib, a family of text faces available in both serif and sans, in two cuts, book and medium. Currently in development is a bold weight and Italic cuts.

Nib has been chosen by ATypI as the official typeface of the 2010 conference due to take place in Dublin in September – has won an open:output award for type design – and has been exhibited at London Design Week as part of the Up all night 2009 graduate exhibition.
